Study information
The Mahnomen Railroad Grade Separation Study will review the three rail crossings located within the City of Mahnomen and recommend opportunities for improvement. The study’s goal is to identify projects that could redesign the existing railroad crossings for people walking, biking and driving to improve safety and reduce delays. Trains blocking the crossings for long periods of time have caused inconvenience for residents and issues accessing the Mahnomen Health Center, schools and other destinations. The feasibility of potentially constructing a roadway over or under the railroad will be explored for future consideration, among other potential project improvements.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in partnership with White Earth Nation, will develop the study through 2024, and identify possible short- and long-term crossing enhancements. The study process will involve community and stakeholder participation to understand existing issues and opportunities to improve safety and mobility for people crossing the railroad in Mahnomen.
