MnDOT starts Highway 169 project in Garrison, adds new roundabout

BAXTER, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin a six-month, $12.4 million project to improve five miles of Highway 169 from Crow Wing County Road 26 to Pike Avenue, including a new roundabout at the Highway 18 in Garrison to improve safety and traffic flow.

Work begins April 30 as crews mobilize equipment, install traffic control devices and prepare work areas. Motorists should expect segments of lane and shoulder closures and reduced speeds throughout the area.

Project highlights

  • Reconstruct Highway 169 through Garrison
  • Build a single-lane roundabout at Highway 169, Highway 18 and Monroe Street
  • Install new storm sewer and upgrade sidewalks and lighting
  • Resurface Highway 169 north and south of Garrison
  • Reconfigure turn lanes at County Road 26
  • Repair or replace drainage structures, including the historic Saint Alban’s Bay culvert
  • Upgrade guardrail, install new road markings and rumble/mumble strips

Detour begins May 11

After the fishing opener, Highway 169 will close between Highway 18 in Garrison and Pike Avenue through mid-June. A signed detour will use Highway 18, Highway 6 and County Road 14/11 (PNG).

Local access will remain open, but travelers should expect changing entrances, flaggers and gravel or grooved surfaces.

TNT Construction Group, LLC, is the project’s prime contractor. When lanes reopen in mid-October, travelers will see a smoother roadway, updated infrastructure, and improved safety and traffic flow in the Garrison area.
