Hwy 25 roadwork begins April 13 from Buffalo to Monticello
Detour starts April 21
ST. CLOUD, Minn. –The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin a $11.4 million improvement project on Hwy 25 from Buffalo to Monticello on April 13, with work continuing through late October. The highway will close and detour for the duration of reconstruction.
April 13–20: Motorists will encounter periodic lane or shoulder closures as crews prepare work areas and set up the detour route.
April 21–early July: Hwy 25 will close between Cameron Avenue NE (Wright County Road 131) and John Ause Memorial Drive in Buffalo. Follow signed detour via County Road 131, County Road 37, County Road 12 and Hwy 55.
Access will be maintained for those who live, work or visit destinations within the work zone, but temporary hard closures will occur as crews work beneath the highway. Plan to enter or exit nearest your destination and follow local signage.
The project will reconstruct seven miles of roadway, repair drainage, improve several access points and build three new roundabouts at Hwy 25/County Road 37, Hwy 25/Catlin Street and, by Wright County, at County Road 113 (starting after June). Pedestrian improvements and trail connections will also be added.
In July, the detour will adjust as crews begin work to rebuild and recycle the road surface using Stabilized Full Depth Reclamation (SFDR). This method requires deep excavation and large equipment, so even though crews work one lane at a time, Hwy 25 must remain closed to through traffic.

When all lanes open in fall 2026, the project will provide a smoother road surface, improve traveler safety and update drainage along seven miles of Hwy 25.
