Portion of Center Avenue closes Oct. 30 for 11th Street underpass project

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Starting Thursday, Oct. 30, motorists will encounter new traffic changes in downtown Moorhead as construction of the 11th Street underpass progresses to its third and final stage, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. By the end of the day on Thursday:

  • All lanes will reopen on First Avenue, including at 10th Street and 12th Street. The north block of 11th Street will remain closed into early November.
  • One lane in each direction will reopen on Main Avenue for east and west traffic only. All lanes on Main Avenue are expected to reopen in mid- to late-November.
  • Center Avenue will close between 10th Street and 14th Street through November 2026.

Patience is appreciated as drivers get familiar with the new traffic patterns and routes. Please plan ahead for potential traffic and rail delays.

Construction will continue until Christmas, weather permitting. In Stage 3 on Center Avenue, they’ll begin with removals, storm sewer installations, and start preparations for piling and construction of the retaining walls.

Crews are expected to slow down in January and February, with full operations starting back up in March or when weather allows. The upcoming closure on Center Avenue will remain in place through the winter, and until the completion of the overall project in November 2026.

The 11th Street Grade Separation project includes two grade separations of 11th Street under the BNSF rail lines, as well as paving, sidewalk improvements, utility replacements and signals. The project will provide safety and mobility benefits by removing blockages caused by heavy rail traffic. The work is being completed in stages through November 2026.

Sign up for project progress emails and learn more on the project website at mndot.gov//d4/projects/moorhead11thstunderpass. A project hotline is available at 218-292-8779. The hotline is staffed during regular business hours and also accepts voicemails from business owners or residents with questions.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, and slowdown in work zones where workers are present.
