Emergency bridge repairs begin Friday, August 1 on Winifred Street pedestrian/bicycle bridge crossing Highway 52 in St. Paul; Weekend overnight closures begin Friday night
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin repairs to the pedestrian/bicycle bridge crossing Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway in St. Paul on Friday, Aug. 1. The bridge, located just north of Cesar Chavez Street/Concord Street, has been closed to the public since last June. The eastern end of the bridge was struck and damaged by an overheight load on the northbound freeway.
As work begins this weekend, the highway will be closed as crews remove the damaged east end of the bridge. Northbound Highway 52 will close between I-94 and Cesar Chavez Street/Concord Street from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1 until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4. The southbound lanes of the freeway will close at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 and reopen by 5 a.m. Saturday in the same area. During the closures, traffic will follow a signed detour using I-494, Highway 61 and I-94.
Remaining work will be done weekend nights to lessen impacts to traffic and the northbound freeway will be closed and detoured (see detour above). Nearby residences also may experience some noise and bright lights during the work but the contractor will take steps to minimize disruptions.
MnDOT expects to complete repairs by mid-August, weather permitting.
