Hwys 63 and Olmsted Co. Rd. 112 intersection detour begins June 2 for roundabout construction north of Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Motorists will encounter a detour at the intersection of Hwy 63 (75th Street) and Olmsted Co. Rd. 112 (18th Avenue) beginning June 2 for roundabout construction north of Rochester, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

This intersection has a history of crashes because of limited gaps in traffic to cross the intersection and increased traffic volume. This project will help reduce crash severity and improve driver safety by regulating traffic flow.

Work is expected to be completed by late-August, 2025. In addition to the roundabout construction, crews will be installing new lighting, making accessibility improvements and installing box culvert north of Hwy 63 on Co. Rd. 112.

This is a joint project between MnDOT and Olmsted County. Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye, MN, is the prime contractor of this $2.9 million project.

Detours

The intersection will be closed during construction and motorists will be detoured.

  • Motorists on Hwy 63, east of the intersection will be detoured south on Olmsted Co. Rd. 33/North Broadway Avenue, west on 48th Street Northwest-55th Street Northwest and north on Hwy 52 to reach Hwy 63. The detour route for motorists west of the intersection uses the same roads in reverse.
  • Motorists north of the intersection on 18th Avenue will be detoured west on Olmsted Co. Rd. 154 (85th Street) and south on 31st Avenue to reach Hwy 63.
  • Motorists south of the intersection on Co. Rd. 112 will be detoured west on 65th Street and north on Hwy 52 to reach Hwy 63.

Benefits of a roundabout

  • Significantly reduces the risk of serious and fatal crashes.
  • Allows drivers to get through the intersection more safely and in less time.
    • Roundabouts handle high levels of traffic with less delay than most stop signs or traffic signals.
  • Slows traffic to make entering and exiting the area easier for all users.
