Highway 19 reconstruction project in Marshall begins May 5

WILLMAR, Minn. – A two-year project to reconstruct Highway 19/College Drive in Marshall begins May 5, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
MnDOT, in partnership with the City of Marshall, is reconstructing 1.8 miles of Highway 19/College Drive from Marlene Street through the intersection of Bruce Street. The project includes replacing pavement, sanitary sewer and watermain; constructing a single-lane roundabout; updating sidewalks and pedestrian ramps to improve accessibility; and, making traffic control changes throughout the route to enhance safety for everyone.

Traffic impacts

  • Work will happen in stages to minimize travel impacts (see attached maps).
  • Beginning May 5, through traffic (travelers who are not visiting Marshall) will be detoured to County Road 7 and Highway 23.
  • In 2025, Highway 19/College Drive will be closed from Fairgrounds Road to Highway 68/Highway 59 to accommodate Stages 1-4.
  • In 2025, the project is scheduled to run from May 5 until Oct. 26 when it will be suspended until spring 2026.
  • In 2026, Highway 19/College Drive will be closed from Highway 68/Highway 59 through Bruce Street to accommodate Stages 5-7.
  • In 2026, the project is scheduled to run from spring 2026 (date to be determined) until Oct. 30.
  • Alternating intersections along Highway 19 will remain open during various stages to maintain local access to homes and businesses.
  • Highway 19/College Drive will be a busy work zone, and we understand this may cause some inconvenience; we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to complete the project.

Project benefits
Once the project has been completed, everyone can enjoy a smoother road surface, enhanced safety, and improved accessibility. The project also improves drainage and will help ensure that city and state infrastructure continue to serve their purpose for many years.
R and G Construction is the primary contractor, and the approximate cost is $25.7 million. This project received $15.4 million in funding from Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, also known as a RAISE grant.
