Description: This three-day Traffic Signal Design course is designed to enable the participants to obtain an understanding of the fundamental concepts and MnDOT standard practices related to the design of traffic signal systems within the State of Minnesota.

Non MnDOT Customers - Submit Traffic Signal Design online registration and payment form. Registration will close 14 days before the start of class.

Signal 101

Audience: Anyone interested in traffic signals including state, county, city and consultant personnel involved in traffic signals.
Description: This is a one-day introductory traffic signal course designed to enable entry-level traffic personnel to acquire a basic knowledge of a traffic signal. The course study will be broad and basic. After completion of the course, the student will have an understanding of how/why a signal is installed, what a signal agreement is and will have a basic understanding of signal plans, operations and component names. Each participant will receive a course manual.

Traffic signal optimization and timing

Audience: State, county, city and consultant personnel involved with traffic signal operations.
Description: This three-day course is designed to enable the participants to obtain an understanding of fundamental concepts and MnDOT standard practices related to traffic signal timing and coordination of signalized intersections along an arterial network. Participants will learn how to develop and analyze traffic signal timing using Synchro software package. Participants will receive a comprehensive MnDOT Signal Optimization and Timing Manual which serves as a stand-alone signal operations reference.

Railroad preemption timing and design for traffic signals

Schedule: Offered as needed.
Last class: September 29-30, 2021
Audience: State, county, city, consultant or private rail company personnel that may be required to interact with light/heavy rail and traffic signal systems using preemption.
Description: Jason Field, PE from Moffatt & Nichol will give a one day online workshop on signal preemption of rail crossing systems and roadway traffic signal systems as well as instructions on how to fill out the preemption form that MnDOT will be using. The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) standards regarding railroad signal allowable track circuit length has been shortened to 50 seconds maximum and an update will be given on these changes. Discussions will include both light and heavy rail systems. The second half day will have Econolite and Intelight vendors give a presentation on their controller products for railroad preemption.
