Tree clearing work begins for Austin pedestrian bridge over Cedar River near I-90

AUSTIN, Minn. – Minnesota Department of Transportation maintenance crews are removing trees along the banks of the Cedar River in Austin to prepare for construction of a new pedestrian-bike bridge north of Interstate 90.

Tree clearing is starting now ahead of the seasonal bird nesting period to ensure birds are not displaced. The work is along the river north of I-90 where the new pedestrian-bike bridge will replace the current structure. This bridge construction will occur this year or in 2027. Tree cutting work is expected to be completed by April 15.

The trail will remain open but may need to close for brief periods for safety when equipment is moved or when individual trees are felled.
