Highway 56-Goodhue Co. Rd. 9 intersection warning system to be removed
DENNISON, Minn. – Minnesota Department of Transportation crews are removing an electronic intersection warning system at Highway 56 and Goodhue County Road 9 to improve clarity for motorists approaching the crossroads.
MnDOT crews will be removing the system on Jan 7-8.
The system, called a Rural Intersection Conflict Warning System, has not achieved the effectiveness MnDOT was seeking in safety improvements. MnDOT is hopeful the removal of these signs, which flash when a vehicle is approaching, will aid motorists in focusing more on the other existing warnings at the intersection.
“This removal helps simplify the intersection for motorists, while maintaining dual oversized flashing stop signs, pavement markings, rumble strips and pre-intersection signs warning of stops ahead,” said Chad Hanson, MnDOT District 6 traffic engineer. “MnDOT continues to work with its safety partners, including Goodhue County, to review the intersection to determine if more needs to be done.”
This intersection in western Goodhue County saw an increase in crashes in 2025 compared to past years. Motorists on the east-west Goodhue County Road 9 are required to stop and wait for traffic traveling on north-south Highway 56.
MnDOT has worked with Goodhue County to improve markings and signs as vehicles approach the intersection. Those efforts include the following:
- Rumble strips on County Road 9 as vehicles approach the intersection
- Stop ahead warning signs on County Road 9 for vehicles approaching the intersection
- Stop Ahead pavement markings on County Road 9
- Oversized dual flashing stop signs at County Road 9
- “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” warning signs at County Road 9
- Cleared vegetation near the intersection to improve visibility for drivers
