New I-90 eastbound bridge, Hwy 52 flyover bridge completed, detours removed
ROCHESTER, Minn. —ROCHESTER, Minn. – Crews are removing all detours and lane closures today (Nov. 14, 2025) at the Interstate 90 and Hwy 52 interchange southeast of Rochester, so all ramps and roads are open, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
MnDOT thanks motorists for their patience as they followed detour routes and slowed down in the work zones. Those choices helped keep our crews safe.
Motorists will begin traveling on a new eastbound I-90 bridge that was built this year. Motorists will also travel under a new Hwy 52 flyover bridge, which will begin operation in 2026 closer to the three-year project’s completion.
The opening of the lanes and removal of detours mark the wrap-up of year 2 of the $27.5 million reconstruction project of the I-90 and Hwy 52 interchange. Crews will continue to be on site working, but not directly on the traffic lanes.
What's opened?
- Hwy 52 is no longer detoured to the south. Traffic will now be able to travel north and south through Marion. Be aware of traffic that is crossing the northbound lanes of Hwy 52 onto eastbound I-90, as well as traffic that may be entering Hwy 52 from I-90.
- I-90 is back to full traffic in the westbound and eastbound lanes. Eastbound I-90 traffic is also crossing Hwy 52 on the new eastbound bridge. Eastbound I-90 can also use the Hwy 52 exit ramp. Motorists exiting from eastbound I-90 should be alert and aware that the Hwy 52 traffic does not stop.
Plans for 2026
- Construct new westbound I-90 bridge
- Straighten and reconstruct westbound I-90 on- and off-ramps, loops. These are in the northeast corner of the interchange.
- Hwy 52 will remain open during 2026 with only short-duration detours when the I-90 westbound bridge is demolished and during work that occurs over Hwy 52 such as beam setting, concrete bridge deck pouring and other work.
- The ramps to and from westbound I-90 will be closed for periods of time during that reconstruction work. When that occurs, traffic will be detoured, using the on- and off-ramps west at Hwy 63 near Stewartville.
Flyover bridge
The Hwy 52 flyover bridge is built, but the I-90 westbound bridge needs to be rebuilt and lengthened next year. The lengthening of the bridge on its west side provides space for southbound Hwy 52 traffic to reach the flyover bridge that will take them to eastbound I-90. The eastbound I-90 bridge was rebuilt this year and lengthened by about 50 feet. This turn movement using the flyover bridge will open in late summer or early fall in 2026.
