Work suspended: Interstate 94 Gap project—Albertville to Monticello
New westbound lanes and bridge now open
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation has suspended mainline construction for the 2025–2026 winter season on the Interstate 94 six-lane expansion project from Albertville to Monticello.
This year, crews widened and reconstructed the westbound road surface; replaced underground drainage structures; built a new westbound bridge over Wright County Road 19 in Albertville; installed portions of the noise walls along I-94 in Monticello; and widened the westbound bridge over County Road 75 in Monticello.
Here’s what drivers can expect on I-94 between County Road 37 in Albertville and Highway 25 in Monticello:
- Westbound and eastbound lanes have returned to their normal configuration and will remain open with two lanes in each direction throughout the 2025–2026 winter season. The newly constructed third westbound lane, located nearest the median, will remain closed until fall 2026.
- The speed limit has returned to 70 miles per hour. However, motorists should slow down if road conditions deteriorate or traffic is congested.
- In the event of a crash and I-94 closure, use the nearest exit and follow posted alternate route signs.
- Off-road work may occur year-round along this project, so drivers should remain alert for construction vehicles and crews working near the interstate.

In spring 2026, crews will return to expand the eastbound lanes while traffic shifts onto the new westbound lanes—maintaining two lanes in each direction.
When all six lanes open in fall 2026, the $76 million Corridors of Commerce-funded project will provide a smoother ride, extend the life of the interstate, improve freight access, increase capacity, reduce bottlenecks, support area growth, and enhance motorist safety along I-94.
