Travelers to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will encounter I-90 and I-35 construction in Minnesota

ALBERT LEA, Minn. – Motorists traveling in southern Minnesota on Interstate 90 and Interstate 35 to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota will encounter construction work zones, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The annual motorcycle event in Sturgis, S.D., from Aug. 4-13 attracts thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who ride or haul their motorcycles to the Black Hills of South Dakota with many traveling on I-35 and across I-90 to and from the event.

For more information about the I-90 projects east to west and the I-35 projects north to south, go to MnDOT's 511mn.org road conditions maps, project websites and other online information:

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.

Safety

Motorists may encounter lane closures or lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, equipment and other unexpected obstacles when driving near or through work zones. MnDOT advises motorists to:

  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Go hands-free and minimize other distractions (e.g., don’t eat or drink while driving).
  • Follow posted speed limits; the fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Avoid making lane changes within work zones.
