Hwy 7 roundabout project near Lester Prairie begins July 17

WILLMAR, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation Hwy 7 roundabout project near Lester Prairie gets underway Monday, July 17. Work is scheduled to be completed by early October.  Start and end dates could change due to weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.

MnDOT, in partnership with McLeod County, is building a roundabout at the intersection of Hwy 7 and County Road 1 near Lester Prairie. Work includes the addition of ADA-accessible sidewalks and a multiuse trail on all sides of the roundabout.

What travelers can expect

  • A detour of Hwy 7 is required to complete the project (see attached map).
  • The detour is scheduled to be in place for the project’s duration and there will be separate detours for vehicle and semi traffic.
  • Several safety enhancements are planned as part of the vehicle detour route in Lester Prairie. The enhancements are temporary and will be removed once the project is complete and the detour is removed.

Project benefits and cost

Benefits of the project include improved traffic flow, and enhanced safety for drivers and pedestrians. The roundabout will slow vehicle speeds and lower the risk of serious and fatal crashes. Mathiowetz Construction is the contractor, and the project cost is $3.7 million.
